The Indian Government has made Employee Provident Fund mandatory for foreign workers. Agreements called “Totalisation Agreements” are being executed with countries having sizable presence of Indian workers. Social Security Agreement, in respect of Belgium, Germany and Switzerland are already operative and Government level talks are on with many other countries.

A Social Security Agreement (hereinafter referred to as the “SSA”) is a bilateral instrument to protect the social security interests of workers posted in another country. Being a reciprocal arrangement, it generally provides for equality of treatment and avoidance of double coverage.
